Mercedes Ballesteros is PhD in Biology by the Autonomous University of Madrid and Master in Biotechnology by the Complutense University of Madrid.
Head of Biofuels Unit at CIEMAT since January 2000 and Head of Research Joined Unit IMDEA Energy-CIEMAT on Biotechnological processes for energy production since April 2011. She has participated in more than 60 R&D projects on biomass research.
Dr. Ballesteros is a Member of the Spanish Society for Biotechnology (SEBIOT), of the European Biofuels Technology Platform (EBTP) and Vice-president of the Spanish Biomass Association (ADABE). She is also the Spanish representative in the European Bioenergy Industrial Initiative of the Strategy Energy Technology Plan, member of the Steering Group in the European Energy Research Alliance in Bioenergy and member of the Coordinator Core in the Spanish Technology Platform (Bioplat).
She participates regularly as a guest speaker at numerous meetings and conferences on energy, especially in the area of bioenergy; and teaches in many courses organized by various universities and organizations. She collaborates as evaluator for the European Commission, the Ibero-American Programme for Science Technology and Development (CYTED), the Spanish Ministry of Environment and the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science, Colciencias (Colombia) and Conicyt (Argentina), among others. She is also external consultant for the Economic Commission for Latin America (ECLAC) of United Nations and for the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECI). She has published numerous papers in SCI journals and chapters in technical handbooks; and she is co-author of three patents.
